Katie Howells – Student Highlight

Meet Katie Howells, our student highlight for this week at Boardman Training Center!

Katie is currently enrolled in the Cardio Phlebotomy program here at BTC and is training to start a new career in the healthcare field. After being interested in phlebotomy for years, Katie decided to make a move and pursue this as a career.

Katie Howells -Student Highlight

“I’ve always been fascinated when getting my blood drawn. After talking to my husband about it, he encouraged me to reach out and see what BTC was all about,” said Katie.

Before attending Boardman Training Center, Katie earned an associate degree in physical therapy from a larger university. She says that it was somewhat of a rough experience because she was young and trying to figure out what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Katie was also working at a physical therapy center before she enrolled at BTC.

Katie loves her classes at Boardman Training Center and feels the Cardio Phlebotomy career training program is the right one for her. “I thought it was the perfect program for me because it’s small, inviting, and personable. The classes were long enough to learn but not too long that you couldn’t work as well,” said Katie.

As she completes her cardio phlebotomy classes, Katie will learn valuable knowledge and practice hands-on skills that she will need to perform while on the job. In only 24 weeks while completing the program, Katie will also prepare for professional healthcare certifications that will give her an edge when applying for jobs.

When asked what her favorite part is of attending BTC, Katie says that it’s “the lifelong friends I have made with both students and instructors.” She goes on to say that her other favorite part is “the quality and quantity of information that is used to teach students who are eager to learn.”

Katie says that her favorite teacher is Elyse. “I love phlebotomy so much, and that is the main reason I chose to come to BTC. Elyse makes learning fun! She’s patient, knowledgeable, and confident,” said Katie.

At Boardman Training Center, we are committed to encouraging and empowering our students to succeed every day. Our personalized learning experience gives you the support you need to excel in your classes and your career.

After she graduates from the cardio phlebotomy program, Katie wants to work in a doctor’s office or hospital setting. “I like to be on the move and would enjoy an atmosphere that allows me to do so,” said Katie.

In five years, Katie wants to be working as a phlebotomist where she can learn and teach others.

Katie says that she would absolutely refer Boardman Training Center to a friend. “It’s a one-of-a-kind program that has so much to offer,” said Katie.

Courtney Preston – Student Highlight

Meet Courtney Preston, this week’s student highlight here at Boardman Training Center!

As a current student in the Cardio-Phlebotomy program, Courtney is gaining essential knowledge and practicing the hands-on skills she needs to succeed in a career in the healthcare field.

Courtney Preston-Student Highlight

“I have always liked the medical field, and I wanted to get back into it without having to go to school for another 1-2 years,” said Courtney.

Before deciding to enroll in cardio phlebotomy classes at Boardman Training Center, Courtney attended a number of other schools, including a larger university, a college, and a beauty school. Although she says she liked all three, she knew she was capable of more and wanted to get back into the medical field. Courtney also works in a beauty shop and does makeup for weddings and special events.

After deciding to get back into the medical field, Courtney looked around for phlebotomy schools and chose BTC. “I decided this was the best one,” she said.

While enrolled in her cardio phlebotomy training classes, Courtney will practice valuable skills, such as performing EKGs, drawing blood, caring for patients, and completing venipuncture procedures. She will also prepare for two professional healthcare certifications, including Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)* and Certified EKG Technician (CET)*.

When asked what her favorite part of attending Boardman Training Center is, Courtney said, “my friends that I have made here make every day I’m here that much more enjoyable, and the knowledge I have gained is a plus!”

Courtney is having a great experience with her instructors, especially her phlebotomy teacher Elyse. “She is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. She goes above and beyond to teach us. The knowledge I gained from her is amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better teacher.”

After she completes her career training classes and graduates from BTC, Courtney’s ideal job is to work in a lab or hospital setting, drawing blood or being an EKG technician. She believes these are good career opportunities for her since she is preparing for certifications in those areas as part of her training.

Courtney has wonderful and ambitious goals for her future. “In five years, I would like to be very successful and knowledgeable in the field I choose, knowing that I have accomplished something to make my life better in the long run,” said Courtney.

When asked if she would refer BTC to a friend, Courtney said, “yes, I have felt very welcome from day one, and the knowledge you get within a short amount of time is worth it.”

What is the Difference Between a CNA & MOS

There are many great reasons to start a career in healthcare. There is a wide variety of available careers, and the healthcare industry is continuing to grow quickly. If you work in healthcare, you also have the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives by helping and caring for patients.

With so many different paths available to starting a career in the medical field, it can be overwhelming and confusing to figure it out by yourself. So we’re here to help by breaking down the differences in two entry-level healthcare positions, certified nursing assistant and medical office specialist.

Career Outlook

Medical office specialists have a promising career outlook. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, medical office specialists, or medical assistants, have a projected growth rate of 19% for 2019-2029 in the United States, which is much higher than the 4% average growth rate for all jobs. This means that employers will be hiring more and more medical office specialists in the years to come and will need qualified candidates to fill the positions.

The BLS estimates that positions for certified nursing assistants will grow 8% in the US between 2019-2029. Although this is higher than the average growth rate of 4% for all occupations, it’s not as high as the expected growth for medical office specialists or medical assistants.

Skills Required

What is the Difference Between a CNA & MOS
Medical office specialists perform a variety of both administrative and clinical duties while on the job. They assess patients and help doctors with patient care and treatment. Some of the skills medical office specialists must learn are helping with exams, administering injections, taking vital signs, preparing lab tests, and entering patient information.
At Boardman Training Center, our medical office specialist students get to practice hands-on skills in classrooms and labs, preparing them for success while on the job.

Certified nursing assistants are more focused on helping with daily living activities and direct patient care. Common skills that CNAs must perform while on the job are bathing and cleaning patients, moving them between wheelchairs and beds, helping patients use the bathroom and get dressed, feeding them, and changing linens.

Training Needed

To begin a career as a medical office specialist, specialized training is required to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills. Most medical office specialist or medical assisting programs are completed in under two years, combining classroom instruction and hands-on training. In addition, it’s helpful to choose a medical office specialist program that prepares you for professional healthcare certifications, as many employers prefer certified candidates.

For example, in our Medical Office Specialist program here at BTC, you learn vital knowledge and practice hands-on skills in essential areas while preparing for professional certifications like Certified Medical Administrative Assistant*, Certified Billing and Coding Specialist*, and Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist*.

Specialized training is also necessary to become a certified nursing assistant, and this training is typically completed in under six months. CNAs will learn and practice different areas, including direct patient care, documentation, and patient safety. The CNA class has to be approved by the state, and a competency exam must be passed upon completion of the program. Additionally, clinical hours are required to become certified, and the number of hours varies by state.

Work Environment

According to BLS data, medical office specialists, or medical assistants, most commonly work in physician’s offices, with 57% working there in 2019. Another 15% work in hospitals, and the remainder work in outpatient care centers and at chiropractor’s offices. Most of these professionals work full-time, 40-hour workweeks, and some may work evenings, weekends, and holidays if they work in a healthcare facility that is always open, like a hospital.

Certified nursing assistants work more in nursing care facilities, with 37% employed there, and hospitals, with 27% employed there, according to data from the BLS. The rest of the employed nursing assistants work in assisted living and retirement facilities, home healthcare services, and government. Certified nursing assistants are required to be on their feet a lot when they work and are expected to lift over 50 pounds, which makes the job more strenuous and physically demanding. Most CNAs are employed full-time, but some work part-time as well. As a result, they may be expected to work more on nights, weekends, and holidays and for longer hours at a time.

Jennifer Fellows – Student Highlight

Meet Jennifer Fellows, our student highlight for the week here at Boardman Training Center!

Like many students who enroll at Boardman Training Center, Jennifer had a different career before her path led her to our healthcare training classes. For over a decade, she worked as a cosmetologist, ran salons, educated and trained others, and served as a district leader and manager.

Jennifer also previously attended a technical school for cosmetology but did not have a good experience. She wanted a school that really cares about its students and found that in BTC.

When asked why she chose Boardman Training Center to further her education, Jennifer said it was because of “the quality of staff and education. They care. They care about your health, happiness, and education.”

Jennifer Fellows-Student Highlight

As Jennifer decided what she wanted to pursue for her new career, she knew that she still wanted to work with people. This led her to a career in the healthcare field, as this would allow her to work with people and make a difference in their lives every day.

After considering the different healthcare programs here at BTC, Jennifer decided on the Cardio Phlebotomy program that trains students for a healthcare career in only 24 weeks while preparing them for professional certifications, including Certified Phlebotomy Technician* and Certified EKG Technician*.

Now that Jennifer is almost finished with this program, she has decided to continue her education with the Medical Office Specialist program. In this healthcare training program, Jennifer will learn valuable hands-on skills, such as recording vital signs, charting, collecting lab specimens, performing injections, and completing basic wound care.

“My favorite part of attending BTC are the friendships I have made with my classmates, the quality of learning, and the respectful environment in which we learn and grow,” says Jennifer.

When asked who is her favorite teacher at Boardman Training Center, Jennifer says, “I honestly don’t have a favorite. I have had almost all of them in one way or another.” However, she does say that she loves intro class the best.

In five years, Jennifer would like to have a job educating and working in a lab, with a 401k retirement plan, health benefits, and a dayshift schedule. She wants to be happy and successful!

Jennifer says that she would absolutely refer Boardman Training Center to a friend. “They are how all schools should be. The level of care behind the scenes helps mold us in the classrooms. They are great role models!”

4 Tips for Better Time Management

We are all provided with the same 24 hours each day. However, it seems that many are able to achieve more during the same time frame. How do they get so much done? What tricks do they know that allow them to get more finished?

The secret is out, and it’s better time management! Being proactive about managing your time allows you to become more efficient at getting things done. There are several key benefits for having great time management skills, such as being less stressed, having extra free time, and achieving your goals. Keep reading to learn more about our top four time management tips!

Organize Everything

The first step to effectively managing your time is being organized. You must understand what needs to be completed to ensure that it all gets done. If you have school assignments, a project that is due at work, or anything else, make a list of all that you need to get done. Creating a to-do list is a simple way to get a full idea of all the tasks you need to complete. You can also organize them into categories by adding labels.

Gathering and organizing everything you will need to get your to-do list done is also essential. Create your own system by making folders and saving everything in them. For example, if you are completing a project for school, save everything you need in one folder on your computer so that when it comes time to do the work, everything you need is there, and you can get the project done faster.

Prioritize Tasks

4 Tips For Better Time Management

You now have your to-do list organized, so it is time to place them in order of priority. When you decide the priority of things, you are taking an extra step to determine which tasks will get completed first. A great way to prioritize is to do the items that are most important and urgent first. For instance, if you are working on a class project that contributes to half of your final grade and is due this week, this should automatically be at the top of your list because it is both urgent and important.

If you have a task that is not as urgent but still important, you can determine when to complete it, such as a work assignment with a due date next month. Some tasks need to be completed in a specific order so that you can do the first steps and then complete the other steps later. This is more common with assignments that require being broken down into smaller tasks as you go. Ensure that you prioritize things that are required to be completed first in order to stay on the right track.

Plan Ahead

You’ve successfully organized all you need to do and prioritized your tasks, so now it’s time to create a plan and decide when you will get each thing completed. Making these plans sets you on the path to success because when you start working each day, you will know exactly what you need to get done. One awesome way to achieve this is by using a calendar to schedule your tasks. First, take your to-do list that was created earlier and set aside time on your calendar by picking dates and times to get the items done. Ensure that you add the most important and urgent things first.

While planning, make sure you have everything needed to complete the item during the time you set aside on your calendar. For instance, if you are doing a graphic design assignment, you must gather the different things you will need ahead of time, such as the correct images and logos, to prepare to complete the assignment. Ensure that you plan and add breaks during your day between tasks, especially for those that take longer to finish. Enjoying breaks will help you stay focused and refreshed.

Create Deadlines

Once you have your week planned out ahead of time, be sure to have a deadline set for each item to be completed. If you are doing a larger project, break the assignment down into smaller pieces and make deadlines for each of the smaller steps. Allow yourself enough time to get everything completed and leave some extra time if any changes or things take longer than anticipated.

Setting time limits to have work done can also be of great help. If you provide yourself with six hours to get something done, it will most likely take all six hours. However, if you give yourself four hours, you can probably get it done in that time. For those of us who are perfectionists, creating time limits can help prevent you from becoming stuck in a cycle of making corrections to try to make it more perfect constantly.

Amar’ia Yates – Student Highlight

Meet Amar’ia Yates, our student highlight feature this week at Boardman Training Center!

Like many people who have just graduated high school, Amar’ia was unsure what she wanted to do next. It can be challenging to choose the one that’s right for you with so many different options.

“I’d just finished high school a few months before. I was working in fast food and retail, and I wasn’t happy,” Amar’ia said. “I had a sense of what I wanted out of life, but I just wasn’t sure where to start.”

After looking at the options available to continue her education, Amar’ia decided she wanted a fast-track healthcare training program that gives you the skills you need and is affordable.

Amar'ia Yates-Student Highlight

“The staff is wonderful. They’ve worked with me, and for once, I felt as someone other than me and my family cared about my education,” said Amar’ia on her decision to attend Boardman Training Center.

She chose to enroll in the Cardio Phlebotomy program, which trains students in just 24 weeks for entry-level opportunities in the healthcare field.

“I choose my program because I wanted to get my foot in the door for a medical career and so I can feel useful to other people in the world,” said Amar’ia.

In the Cardio Phlebotomy training program, Amar’ia will learn and practice specialized skills to use on the job when she starts her new healthcare career. Performing EKGs, drawing blood, completing venipuncture procedures, and practicing patient care are some of the valuable skills Amar’ia will develop as she completes the program.

When asked about her favorite part of attending Boardman Training Center, Amar’ia had great things to say about the staff. “My favorite part of BTC would be the staff there. No one wants to see you fail. They’re like your second family. If you’re having a hard time, they’ll do everything they can to assist you and get you where you need to be,” said Amar’ia.

Amar’ia says that she can’t choose who her favorite teacher or class is just yet, since she has only finished one course. However, she will say that Ms. Sandy, the instructor of her Intro to Healthcare class, was wonderful. “She made class interesting while still teaching me and my fellow classmates. She always pushed into our heads that we can do this, that we’re going to finish strong, and how proud she was of us.”

After she completes the Cardio Phlebotomy program and graduates, Amar’ia would like to work in a hospital, blood bank, or nursing home.

In addition to working in a healthcare facility, Amar’ia would like to further her education in the medical field and enroll in a program or be looking into programs within five years.

When asked if she would recommend Boardman Training Center to a friend, Amar’ia said, “Of course I would refer a friend, because if you’re like me and didn’t really know where to start, BTC is a great place to start. If you’re like my fellow classmates, looking to further your education, or you want to get back into the medical field, choose BTC, and let BTC choose you and meet your goals.”

Maybe you are just like Amar’ia, a little unsure of what to do next and how to get started in a healthcare career. Or perhaps you are like her classmates, who want to take the next step and further their healthcare training and education. How to Stick to Your Resolutions and Goals All Year Long

It’s a brand-new year, and we are now over a month into 2021. We’ve all made New Year’s resolutions for this year; however, making them is always the easiest part. Staying committed to the goals you set for the year is much more difficult.

Maybe you set a resolution to eat healthier and work out more. Or you could have a goal to start a new career by going back to school and attending a career training program. Whatever resolutions you’ve set for 2021, there are several things you can do to help stay focused and on-track to achieving your goals throughout the year. Check out these tips to help you stay committed!

Create a Plan Just for You

The strategies that work for someone else may not be the best solutions for our own needs. We all need a specific plan that is designed to help us reach our goals. To get started, create goals that are specific to you. For instance, if you made a New Year’s resolution to work out more, how many times will you work out per week? What types of exercises will you do to help reach your goals? When and where will you work out? With the answers to these questions, you can create a plan specific to your needs.

Approximately 21 days of repetitive activity helps to create a habit, and 90 days of doing these same activities help to build a lifestyle. As you’re creating a new habit, each time you do something new, it will make things a little easier the next time around. Exercising will not be easy at first, especially if it’s been a while since you have worked out. However, being sore after that initial workout is expected. As time goes on and you continue exercising, you will build endurance and muscle, making things easier. You will get better, and it will eventually come naturally to you.

When we are trying to improve various aspects of ourselves, it may be tempting to try and achieve all our goals at once. But if you create too many resolutions at once, it can be more difficult. Things may become overwhelming while trying to make so many changes at a time. This may demotivate you or cause you to give up easily. If you pick three goals to start with and make them your main priorities, you will be able to reach your goals more successfully.

These days, there’s an app for just about anything you want to do. If one of your goals is to exercise more, then utilizing an app will help you plan your workouts, track your progress, and keep focused. If one of your goals is to choose healthier food options, find an app to help you track meal choices and learn more about which foods are more beneficial. Another goal you may have is to save and budget your money better. Finding an app that helps you track spending can give you better control of your money.

Choose Progress Over Perfection

Change is undoubtedly a process that does not come overnight. The Empire State Building was not built in a day, and the Mona Lisa was not painted overnight. Making strides toward greatness takes time, and that includes achieving our goals. If you’ve created a goal to go back to school and begin a new career, then all the classes you attend, and every test you pass will help you progress to accomplish your goal of getting a new job. It takes time to complete your career training classes, but you will be ready to start your new career when you’re finished.

If we always wait for the perfect moment to do something, we may never accomplish anything. The perfect time does not exist, and things will never be exactly how we want them. If we would like to take a step toward our goals and dreams, then we must venture out and take a leap of faith.

In reality, perfection does not exist. It’s just something that we attempt to achieve that keeps us doing the same things in repetition. For example, if you want to become a vegetarian and one day you slip up and have a piece of meat, this does not mean that you are a failure. Instead, it would help if you thought about what circumstances led to you eating meat and what you can do the next day to improve. Gathering your thoughts and learning from the situation can help you do better next time, changing failures into successful moments and helping us make progress as we go.

Continuing to stay focused on your goals and resolutions can be difficult. It’s so exciting at the start, but as time passes, that excitement can wear off, and motivation can drop. There are some great ways to stay focused throughout the year! For instance, if you are going back to school to start a new career, you could try rewarding yourself with a sweet treat each time you do great on a test. Practicing daily affirmations can inspire you to get the lifestyle you want and keep you on track. Finding words or quotes that motivate you and placing them in a spot to view when you wake up in the morning can help immensely. You could make sticky notes or set up notifications on your phone.

The third option to help you maintain focus is to know why you made your resolutions. Think about what pushed you to achieve these specific goals. What drives you to make these changes? Maybe you started to get a better job that can help improve your lives and your family. Or perhaps you wanted to set an example for your kids, so they can see what’s possible with hard work and dedication. There will be days when you feel like a failure or feel like throwing in the towel, but if you stop thinking about why you started, it can help improve your mindset and keep you motivated.

Get Support of Family and Friends

Support from those around you can make or break your progress toward your goals. If you are surrounded by a strong network of friends and family who offer support, it will be much easier for you to keep your resolutions. Additionally, having someone who can mentor you, who has already successfully gone through the process and made it to where you want to be, can help you on your path to achieving your goals. They can share best practices with you and insight from their own experiences. Intentionally creating this type of network will surround you with positive influence. Build your team of cheerleaders who help motivate you along the way and remember that it’s okay to ask others for help.

Finding an accountability partner, like a friend with the same resolution as you, can also have a significant impact. Partner with them to keep each other motivated and on the right path. Spend time daily or weekly speaking with each other to check up on progress or any issues you both may encounter. Having someone you can talk to can help you stay committed.
