4 Tips for Balancing School, Work, and Life During the Holidays

The holiday season is here and with it comes festive cookies, holiday parties, and family fun! We all enjoy spending time with loved ones and finding the perfect gifts, but balancing extra activities during the holidays can be a challenge when you attend school, work, and have a family life.

With so much going on during this special time of year, how can you ensure everything gets done without you becoming stressed and overwhelmed?

Read on as we share our top tips with you for balancing school, work, and life during the holidays!

Tip #1 – Stay Organized

The key to getting everything on your list done during the holiday season is to stay organized. The best way to do this is to use your calendar to organize everything you need to do. If using a digital calendar like Google Calendar, you can also set alerts to be notified when it’s time to do something you scheduled.

Start by adding all your school information to your calendar, including your class schedule, due dates, and exam dates. If you know you will need to study for an exam, block off time on your calendar to get it done. Now add your work schedule, family activities, and events you will be attending to your calendar.

Once you have everything added, you’ll have a better idea of when and how you can get everything done. If you are overbooked, you may need to remove something or change your commitments.

Tip #2 – Use Time Management

Practicing good time management is the secret for balancing school, work, and life during the holidays. When setting aside time to get specific things done, be realistic about how much time it will take to complete and ensure you have given yourself enough time.

Don’t over book yourself and commit to too many things, as this will cause unnecessary stress and leave you feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

Prioritize your school, work, and family activities that need to get done. Once you’ve done this, if you need to remove something from your schedule, you can take out a lower priority item and still get the important stuff completed.

Tip #3 – Get Ahead

Since the holidays are such a busy time, try to get ahead as much as possible, so you have more time for holiday fun. Get ahead of schoolwork like projects and assignments, and work ahead at your job as much as you can.

For example, if you have a project at work that’s due right before Christmas, try to get it done early so you’re not stressed about trying to finish it right before the due date. Definitely do not procrastinate and wait until the last minute to get something done because the quality of your work may not be as high, and you can become easily stressed and irritated.

Start your Christmas shopping early so you’re not running around looking for gifts on Christmas Eve. Remember to allow extra time when ordering gifts online, because shipping always takes longer during the holidays.

Tip #4 – Practice Self-Care

Now that you’re organized, using good time management, and getting ahead, it’s time to practice some self-care. The holidays are meant to be a joyful time with family and friends, so keep this in mind when you feel overwhelmed.

Getting enough sleep and eating healthy are two great ways to practice self-care during the holidays. You may be tempted to sleep less to get things done, but there are many scientific studies that show not getting enough sleep is bad for your health and productivity. When surrounded by so much food and sweets during the holidays, it can be easy to eat whatever is available, instead of eating healthily. Try to eat healthily to keep your energy up during this busy time!

Make time for yourself to relax and recharge during the busy holiday season. Schedule your self-care time on your calendar if you need to. It can seem counterproductive to do nothing, but you will feel much better after recharging your energy. Remember, you can always say “no” if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

How to Dress for Success

We’ve all heard the saying, dress for the job you want, not the job you have, but how can you actually do this? How can you dress to ensure you make a great first impression to get your dream job?

Your appearance begins to speak for you from the moment you meet someone new, even before you have said anything. People notice things about your appearance, such as the clothes you’re wearing and your hairstyle, and make assumptions about you based on them.

So how can you ensure you’re dressing for success and making an awesome first impression? Keep reading as we share our top tips with you!

Dress for the Company Culture

Every company has its own unique culture and follows a different dress code. It’s best to align yourself with each specific company’s culture and dress code anytime you are meeting or interviewing with them. This helps to show that you’re a good fit. As an example, if you have a job interview with a bank, wear a suit because the banking industry follows a more formal dress code than others.

Spend some time researching a company’s dress code before a meeting or interview, so you can dress to impress! Here are some of the most common dress codes used today:

  • Business Formal – Formal suits, solid color ties, button-up shirts, dress shoes, and dark colors are all common as part of the most formal dress code.
  • Business Professional – Dress pants, professional skirts, sports jackets, patterned ties, and nice shirts are all great for this dress code, as it allows you to wear more color.
  • Business Casual – Shirts with colors and patterns, skirts in different colors, khakis, polos, vests, and sweaters are all great for adding more personality to your look in this dress code.
  • Casual – T-shirts, jeans, skirts, sweaters, sandals, and sneakers are all acceptable in this dress code because it’s the most informal, allowing for many outfit choices.

To show your professionalism and make a great first impression, always dress up for meetings and interviews, even if a company follows a more casual dress code.

Dress for the Specific Event

Depending on the type of career event you’re going to, it can require different outfit choices. When dressing for a job interview, always wear professional attire, as this can give you an advantage over other candidates. Wearing clothing from the business professional dress code, keeping jewelry and fragrance to a minimum, and rocking a clean, neat hairstyle are all great tips for interviews. With only one chance to make a great first impression, you have to make it count!

In today’s digital world, interviews are often held over video with Skype or a similar program. You must still dress up and look your professional best for a video interview because the person interviewing you will be able to see at least the top half of you via the video. Be sure to wear business clothes with a professional hairstyle.

When attending things like networking events and career fairs, it’s essential to look your best here as well. The people you meet could be hiring directly or could refer you to other opportunities, so do your best to make a great first impression.

Dress for Success Tips

For students and new graduates just starting their professional careers, dressing for success can be overwhelming and challenging. Not currently having a professional wardrobe and being unsure of what is workplace appropriate are common issues. Check out these tips to get you started:

  • Shop strategically and purchase clothes you can wear many ways.
  • Wear more solid colors in your clothing choices.
  • Dress in clothing that is appropriate for the workplace.
  • Accessorize with minimal jewelry.
  • Hide piercings and tattoos, because you want people focused on how great you are, not thinking about what your tattoo means.
  • Wear hair in a clean, neat, and professional style.
  • Keep perfume or cologne minimal, as others could be allergic.
  • Wear makeup that looks natural and professional.

If you’re ever unsure of how to dress to make a great first impression, think about this quote from Oscar Wilde: “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.”

Miranda Washington – Student Highlight

Meet Miranda, our student highlight for the week!

Miranda is enrolled in the Cardio-Phlebotomy program and is having a great experience with her medical training classes at Boardman Training Center.

Before enrolling with BTC, Miranda attended a community college to earn an EMT certificate. She says it was an exciting, eventful, and challenging experience, but she was not able to get the experience she wanted.

Miranda Washington

“I heard great things about this training center. I also appreciated the daylight classes and hours, and am excited about the hands-on experience,” says Miranda. Boardman Training Center was recommended to her by a family member to get on the fast track to a great medical career.

Miranda choose the Cardio-Phlebotomy program because she wanted to take the steps needed to pursue a great career in the medical field.  She would love to work in a hospital lab setting and eventually wants to become a nurse.

Learning new things and making new friends is Miranda’s favorite part of attending classes at Boardman Training Center. She loves that everyone is so nice and on the same page with a similar mindset to hers.

With such a busy life, she loves that she can take her classes three days a week. “If someone has a busy life, then BTC is for them,” says Miranda.

So far, Danielle is Miranda’s favorite teacher because she is “sweet, talkative, has experience, is very knowledgeable and is a great teacher.” Miranda says that “she makes everything easy to learn and challenges her students in a good way.”

“It’s nice to go to school with other people who have the same fears as you, so you know you’re not alone. There is support in the classroom here,” says Miranda.

In addition to attending classes at Boardman Training Center, Miranda works for a security company, cares for her 98-year-old grandmother, and is a mother of three children, two boys and one girl, who are very excited that their mom is in school.

At Boardman Training Center, our healthcare programs allow you to kick start your medical career. In addition to Cardio-Phlebotomy, BTC also trains students for EKG Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, and Medical Office Specialist careers.

Tamarra Royal – Student Highlight

Meet Tamarra, our featured student for the week!

Tamarra Royal

Tamarra is enrolled in the Phlebotomy Technician and Medical Office Specialist programs at Boardman Training Center. She started at BTC in November of 2018 and has loved her experience so far.

Before starting at BTC, Tamarra worked in the restaurant industry, living paycheck-to-paycheck with no real goals. She eventually got tired of this and realized she wanted a career and not just a job.

Looking for a change in her life that would lead to a better future with a great career, and not just a job, Tamarra decided to enroll at BTC, where smaller class sizes and one-on-one attention from faculty enable students to succeed.

“I wanted to do something in the medical field, and this was the perfect stepping stone,” said Tamarra.

Tamarra previously attended another college for a short time and found it to be too stressful while working and going to school. She wanted a program with more personalized attention and flexibility.

“My favorite part of attending BTC so far has been the people and the experience. The program is super flexible so I can work, I know exactly when exams are, and I enjoy utilizing Google Classroom,” said Tamarra. “Nikki, Steven, and Dave are my favorites and I can’t choose between them!”

Tamarra loves that her phlebotomy and medical office programs are straight to the point and that she can take the exact classes she needs in order to graduate sooner.

She also loves the personalized attention she receives from instructors. “If you’re holding the needle wrong, the teacher will stop you and show you exactly how to do it correctly.”

Tamarra highly recommends Boardman Training Center and has referred friends and family to train for medical careers at BTC. The chance for a better future, no longer living paycheck-to-paycheck, not as may crazy hours, and more time to spend with family are just a few of the benefits of BTC she has shared with others.

Shelby Timms – Student Highlight

Shelby Timms is a student at Boardman Training Center (BTC) and enrolled in the Medical Office Specialist program. Shelby decided to enroll in BTC after seeing an ad on Instagram and immediately reached out by phone because she knew she needed a career change. Prior to attending BTC Shelby ran training operations for a small business called Rise Pies. Shelby was responsible for running the store and developing training materials. The medical field had always been an interest of Shelby’s but after being out of school for seven years, she wasn’t sure she would be able to find the right kind of program for her. However, she felt comfortable with the programs at Boardman Training Center because of the smaller classes, one on one instruction, and the ability to focus on one class at a time.

Shelby stated, “My favorite part of attending BTC is the staff! The staff makes you feel welcome and that you are not just ‘another student’. The instructors and staff make the workload fun and interactive, and do not act robotic when teaching.” Shelby also stated, “I love all of the teachers and couldn’t imagine picking a favorite because each of them has a teaching style that makes the classwork fun and easy to understand. I just started the EKG Technician program, and I feel that this is going to be one of my favorites.”

After graduation, Shelby would like to start her career in an office to begin to apply her new knowledge, but within the next five years, Shelby wants to either have a BSN or RN degree and be able to grow in her medical career.
