Meet Katie Howells, our student highlight for this week at Boardman Training Center!
Katie is currently enrolled in the Cardio Phlebotomy program here at BTC and is training to start a new career in the healthcare field. After being interested in phlebotomy for years, Katie decided to make a move and pursue this as a career.
“I’ve always been fascinated when getting my blood drawn. After talking to my husband about it, he encouraged me to reach out and see what BTC was all about,” said Katie.
Before attending Boardman Training Center, Katie earned an associate degree in physical therapy from a larger university. She says that it was somewhat of a rough experience because she was young and trying to figure out what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Katie was also working at a physical therapy center before she enrolled at BTC.
Katie loves her classes at Boardman Training Center and feels the Cardio Phlebotomy career training program is the right one for her. “I thought it was the perfect program for me because it’s small, inviting, and personable. The classes were long enough to learn but not too long that you couldn’t work as well,” said Katie.
As she completes her cardio phlebotomy classes, Katie will learn valuable knowledge and practice hands-on skills that she will need to perform while on the job. In only 24 weeks while completing the program, Katie will also prepare for professional healthcare certifications that will give her an edge when applying for jobs.
When asked what her favorite part is of attending BTC, Katie says that it’s “the lifelong friends I have made with both students and instructors.” She goes on to say that her other favorite part is “the quality and quantity of information that is used to teach students who are eager to learn.”
Katie says that her favorite teacher is Elyse. “I love phlebotomy so much, and that is the main reason I chose to come to BTC. Elyse makes learning fun! She’s patient, knowledgeable, and confident,” said Katie.

After she graduates from the cardio phlebotomy program, Katie wants to work in a doctor’s office or hospital setting. “I like to be on the move and would enjoy an atmosphere that allows me to do so,” said Katie.
In five years, Katie wants to be working as a phlebotomist where she can learn and teach others.
Katie says that she would absolutely refer Boardman Training Center to a friend. “It’s a one-of-a-kind program that has so much to offer,” said Katie.
