Shaun McCune – Graduate Highlight

Meet Shaun McCune, our graduate student highlight for this week at Boardman Training Center!

Like many students who attend BTC, Shaun wanted a quick and affordable way to get the training he needs to begin working in the healthcare field. “I was considering going into the medical field, and BTC offered an affordable way to start working in this field. I also prefer having live, on-campus classes instead of a purely online course,” said Shaun.

Shaun enrolled in the Cardio Phlebotomy program at BTC and is on the fast-track to starting his new career. When deciding on which program to attend, Shaun thought both EKG and phlebotomy seemed interesting, which is what led him to the Cardio Phlebotomy classes that include both. Shaun also thought that completing training in multiple areas sounded like a great way to keep job prospects open.

Before enrolling at Boardman Training Center, Shaun attended a larger university and earned a Bachelor of Music in guitar performance. While Shaun learned a lot more than he expected about music and guitar, he said he could not make a good living with that degree.

Shaun also worked at a shipping facility before deciding to attend BTC. He enjoyed the job there but did not want to pursue a career in freight services. Instead, he wanted to start a career in the healthcare field.

When asked what his favorite part of attending BTC was, Shaun said it is “getting to know the instructors and staff who have been very open to my questions and future possibilities.”

Shaun said that Mrs. Irene was a very engaging teacher, and EKG has been a super interesting topic to learn about, adding that he has found that cardiac rhythms have similarities with his music training.

“I have been fortunate to have already landed an EKG Monitor Tech position at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown. Gaining hospital experience while having full-time hours and benefits is a big plus,” said Shaun.

In the future, Shaun hopes to continue his training in the healthcare field by going into cardiac sonography. He believes that having experience with EKGs is very applicable to diagnostic imaging of the heart. Shaun also feels that there is something satisfying about working with rhythms and sound waves.

When asked if he would recommend Boardman Training Center to a friend, Shaun said, “yes, especially if the individual wants to go into medicine but does not know where to start.” For example, Shaun said that someone who wants to go into nursing could start working in healthcare as a phlebotomist and then find an employer that offers tuition assistance to complete a nursing program.

“I found the teachers and staff to be very supportive and flexible. They are extremely helpful with the hands-on, stressful elements of phlebotomy. They are very passionate about seeing me achieve my goals and start a new career,” said Shaun.
