Meet the Campus Director

Meet Sandy Poynter, Campus Director at Boardman Training Center!
Meet the Campus Director

As the new Campus Director here at BTC, Sandy is committed to helping her students achieve their career goals. “I really want to see each student fulfill their goals and their dreams. It’s my mission to prepare them for their careers in whatever they choose, whether that is EKG, phlebotomy, or MOS,” said Sandy.

Sandy is passionate about education and believes it is essential. “The students drive me to work in education. Meeting them at the beginning, watching them grow and succeed in their careers is amazing. I love seeing the results. We watch them walk in one day, and 6 months later, we watch them walk out the door, successful and with smiles on their faces,” said Sandy.

There are no other training centers in the Youngstown area, so Sandy believes the Boardman Training Center is necessary to the local healthcare community. Due to the increased access to healthcare and the aging baby boomer population, the healthcare industry has expanded for many years. “The area is in desperate need of medical professionals,” said Sandy.

Boardman Training Center helps fill this need for healthcare professionals by providing fast-track healthcare training classes that students complete in months, not years. With short-term classes, one-on-one instruction, and small class sizes, students can get the training they need quickly to help them start their careers faster.

For anyone thinking about attending BTC, Sandy wants you to know that she, the staff, and instructors are here for you personally to help prepare you for career success. “You are not just a number. You are a name. We’re like a family here. Being so small, we get to know our students personally. Every one of us in this building wants to see our students thrive,” said Sandy.

Before starting her career in the education industry, Sandy worked at a library for over 20 years. She began right out of high school as a clerk and moved up into an administrative assistant role. After deciding that she wanted a career change, Sandy chose Ohio Valley College of Technology to earn her degree. She attended in 1995 for a business degree and again in 2012 for medical office administration. When she was enrolled in 2012, she decided to continue with medical assisting. Sandy has three associate degrees and is also nationally certified.

After graduating from OVCT, Sandy worked in a doctor’s office from 2014 to 2016. An instructor position became available, and she was hired for the role here at Boardman Training Center. Then, she was recruited to teach at Ohio Valley College of Technology, so she began there as an instructor. Since 2016, she has been an instructor at both OVCT and BTC.

Sandy was then offered the position of Campus Director here at Boardman Training Center and decided to accept. She has only been in this new role for a few months, but Sandy loves that she has the ability to ensure students are happy and successful and that the staff feels appreciated. She believes she can make the school a better place and take it in a good direction.

Sandy says that her new role motivates her every day. “I’m driven knowing that there are staff and students that rely on me. I can build relationships with each of them. It’s great knowing that there is a need and want for me here at BTC,” said Sandy.

When asked what accomplishment in her life she is most proud of, Sandy said, “I’m most proud of my family, including my fiancé Matt and my two boys, Zach, 22, and Cameron, 19. Watching my two boys grow into the young men they are becoming is amazing. Zack is an EMT and getting married next October. Cameron recently graduated high school and is working toward his goals.”

Sandy has some great advice for those pursuing their dreams. “The best advice ever given to me is that if you set your goals and put your mind to it, the sky is the limit. If you put your mind to whatever you want, you will achieve it,” said Sandy.

Outside of work, Sandy says that she enjoys family time. “I love family vacations, picnics in the backyard, barbeques, and doing things outdoors, like going to local parks and taking neighborhood walks. I also love visiting with friends that are like family,” she said.

When asked about her favorite food, Sandy says she has two of them, pasta and seafood. She says they are the perfect comfort foods. If Sandy could have any superpower, it would be the ability to fly. “I would love to travel the world and see the many beautiful things that it has to offer,” she said.

Katie Howells – Student Highlight

Meet Katie Howells, our student highlight for this week at Boardman Training Center!

Katie is currently enrolled in the Cardio Phlebotomy program here at BTC and is training to start a new career in the healthcare field. After being interested in phlebotomy for years, Katie decided to make a move and pursue this as a career.

Katie Howells -Student Highlight

“I’ve always been fascinated when getting my blood drawn. After talking to my husband about it, he encouraged me to reach out and see what BTC was all about,” said Katie.

Before attending Boardman Training Center, Katie earned an associate degree in physical therapy from a larger university. She says that it was somewhat of a rough experience because she was young and trying to figure out what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Katie was also working at a physical therapy center before she enrolled at BTC.

Katie loves her classes at Boardman Training Center and feels the Cardio Phlebotomy career training program is the right one for her. “I thought it was the perfect program for me because it’s small, inviting, and personable. The classes were long enough to learn but not too long that you couldn’t work as well,” said Katie.

As she completes her cardio phlebotomy classes, Katie will learn valuable knowledge and practice hands-on skills that she will need to perform while on the job. In only 24 weeks while completing the program, Katie will also prepare for professional healthcare certifications that will give her an edge when applying for jobs.

When asked what her favorite part is of attending BTC, Katie says that it’s “the lifelong friends I have made with both students and instructors.” She goes on to say that her other favorite part is “the quality and quantity of information that is used to teach students who are eager to learn.”

Katie says that her favorite teacher is Elyse. “I love phlebotomy so much, and that is the main reason I chose to come to BTC. Elyse makes learning fun! She’s patient, knowledgeable, and confident,” said Katie.

At Boardman Training Center, we are committed to encouraging and empowering our students to succeed every day. Our personalized learning experience gives you the support you need to excel in your classes and your career.

After she graduates from the cardio phlebotomy program, Katie wants to work in a doctor’s office or hospital setting. “I like to be on the move and would enjoy an atmosphere that allows me to do so,” said Katie.

In five years, Katie wants to be working as a phlebotomist where she can learn and teach others.

Katie says that she would absolutely refer Boardman Training Center to a friend. “It’s a one-of-a-kind program that has so much to offer,” said Katie.

Courtney Preston – Student Highlight

Meet Courtney Preston, this week’s student highlight here at Boardman Training Center!

As a current student in the Cardio-Phlebotomy program, Courtney is gaining essential knowledge and practicing the hands-on skills she needs to succeed in a career in the healthcare field.

Courtney Preston-Student Highlight

“I have always liked the medical field, and I wanted to get back into it without having to go to school for another 1-2 years,” said Courtney.

Before deciding to enroll in cardio phlebotomy classes at Boardman Training Center, Courtney attended a number of other schools, including a larger university, a college, and a beauty school. Although she says she liked all three, she knew she was capable of more and wanted to get back into the medical field. Courtney also works in a beauty shop and does makeup for weddings and special events.

After deciding to get back into the medical field, Courtney looked around for phlebotomy schools and chose BTC. “I decided this was the best one,” she said.

While enrolled in her cardio phlebotomy training classes, Courtney will practice valuable skills, such as performing EKGs, drawing blood, caring for patients, and completing venipuncture procedures. She will also prepare for two professional healthcare certifications, including Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)* and Certified EKG Technician (CET)*.

When asked what her favorite part of attending Boardman Training Center is, Courtney said, “my friends that I have made here make every day I’m here that much more enjoyable, and the knowledge I have gained is a plus!”

Courtney is having a great experience with her instructors, especially her phlebotomy teacher Elyse. “She is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. She goes above and beyond to teach us. The knowledge I gained from her is amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better teacher.”

After she completes her career training classes and graduates from BTC, Courtney’s ideal job is to work in a lab or hospital setting, drawing blood or being an EKG technician. She believes these are good career opportunities for her since she is preparing for certifications in those areas as part of her training.

Courtney has wonderful and ambitious goals for her future. “In five years, I would like to be very successful and knowledgeable in the field I choose, knowing that I have accomplished something to make my life better in the long run,” said Courtney.

When asked if she would refer BTC to a friend, Courtney said, “yes, I have felt very welcome from day one, and the knowledge you get within a short amount of time is worth it.”

Eileen Syfert – Student Highlight

Meet Eileen Syfert, our student highlight for the week at Boardman Training Center!

Have you ever felt like you wanted a more fulfilling career, one that allows you to really make a difference and help people? This is exactly how Eileen felt before deciding to begin fast track career training at BTC.

Eileen Syfert

After helping her grandfather for a year, it sparked Eileen’s interest to work in the medical field and do something worthwhile with her career.

Additionally, Eileen traveled to Europe for three months and visited Norway and Sweden. This was a great experience and gave her some time to reflect, which really put things into perspective for her. Eileen knew she felt lost in her career but didn’t know exactly what she wanted to do.

Before enrolling with Boardman Training Center, Eileen attended a community college for criminal justice and worked for a criminal defense attorney as a legal assistant, but she didn’t like sitting at a desk all day and wanted something that would allow her to get up and move around more.

“I choose BTC because I wanted a new, more fulfilling career, and everyone here was extremely helpful, positive, and encouraging,” said Eileen. After coming to the Boardman Training Center campus and meeting with Nikki, BTC Admissions Advisor, Eileen realized there was nothing stopping her from enrolling in school, and she signed up the very next day.

Eileen chose the Cardio Phlebotomy program at BTC as a way to break into the healthcare field.

“I thought the programs here would be the perfect introduction into the healthcare field. I felt like I could make a difference and have more purpose at work,” said Eileen.

So far, phlebotomy has been Eileen’s favorite class. She says that drawing blood is exciting and a nice balance of challenging and fun.

When asked what her favorite part of attending fast track training classes at BTC is, Eileen said, “I love that I feel valued and heard as a student. Anytime I have an issue, the instructors go above and beyond to help me overcome the issue.”

Eileen says she feels a sense of belonging at Boardman Training Center and has already recommended the school to others. One person has already signed up and will be starting classes soon!
