The Emerging Trend of Skills-Based Learning

Technology has changed the way the world conducts business, and as a result, companies have also had to change the way they hire qualified employees. According to a LinkedIn research article, skills-based hiring is increasing in the United States. Consequently, how students learn has changed as well. Today’s students gain knowledge by being more involved in their education through skills-based learning.

What Is Skills-Based Learning?

Skills-based learning builds on the knowledge students receive in the classroom, encouraging them to think critically and analyze data as they apply the hands-on skills they’ve learned. This training allows students to gain valuable practice with the skills that are career-specific to their chosen field. Skills-based learning can then be applied to real-life situations through interactive labs and in their careers.

Why All the Focus on Skills?

Employers want employees who can hit the ground running. Candidates who already possess the skills required for specialized jobs are better equipped to perform their duties when hired. Training new employees can be labor-intensive and costly. Hiring employees who have already learned valuable skills is both efficient and effective, saving employers valuable resources.
The Emerging Trend of Skills-Based Learning

Increasing the focus on skills-based learning enables students to stay updated on best practices, trends, and technology in their chosen field. One example is in the phlebotomy field. Phlebotomists must be trained in the current best practices, so they can better care for their patients.

Learning in a skills-based environment prepares students with the most advanced skills needed, while also bridging the gap between what employers need in candidates and the skills students have when they graduate.

What Are the Benefits of This?

Choosing a career training program that focuses on skills-based learning places students on the fast track to their career of choice. This type of program permits students to take only the classes they need while allowing them to complete their program in less time.

Boardman Training Center designed our training programs to meet the needs of local employers, enabling students to learn the skills that employers need as they prepare for professional, skills-based certifications*. Students gain valuable experience while applying their skills to real-life situations during their interactive labs.

Skills-based learning also engages students by empowering them to improve the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they’ve learned in the classroom.

How Do You Choose the Right Program?

With so many options available, choosing the right training program or school that offers important, skills-based learning can be confusing. BTC makes it easy to find a program that teaches the skills you’ll need for the career you want to pursue. For example, if you’re interested in healthcare and would like to work as a medical office specialist, then you’ll need a program that specializes in the skills that medical office professionals use every day, including taking vital signs, charting, and injections, among other duties.

You should also choose a program that includes practical ways for you to practice your skills while gaining experience, including hands-on training, interactive labs, and certification* preparation, which is part of our training programs here at Boardman Training Center.

Katarina Lewis – Student Highlight

Meet Katarina Lewis, our student highlight for the week!

Like many people who want to start a career in healthcare, Katarina felt she needed to earn a professional medical certification to get a job. She chose Boardman Training Center to get on the fast track to a great healthcare career by preparing for a certification in just weeks.

“I heard a lot of good things about BTC and I really liked how quick the program was, which allowed me to become certified and find a job in a very reasonable amount of time,” said Katarina.

Katarina has always been interested in the medical field and chose the Cardio Phlebotomy program because she felt it would give her the hands-on experience she was looking for in a career training program.

Before enrolling at BTC, Katarina attended a larger university and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She says it was a great experience and she learned a lot, but she still needed a medical certification before she could get a job in healthcare.

Katarina Lewis-Student Highlight

After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Katarina started Cardio Phlebotomy classes at BTC one month later, because she wants to earn a certification and get finished with school as soon as possible.

Katarina is currently working as a Radiology Clerical Associate at Mercy Health-St. Elizabeth. In this role, she looks up test results and makes sure they are good, and then communicates the results of any that are not good to the next level up. She plays an important role in the healthcare team, working with patients, doctors, technicians, and nurses.

While attending Boardman Training Center, Katarina has had a great student experience. “The teachers are always here to help the students, which you can’t always find at other schools. They want you to succeed,” said Katarina.

Mike Giles from EKG has been Katarina’s favorite teacher because “he brought real-life stories to class every day, which made it entertaining and helped us learn the material.”

After graduating from BTC and earning her professional healthcare certification, Katarina hopes to work as a phlebotomist at an outpatient lab or a hospital lab. She says she is not too picky about her job, as long as she enjoys it.

In five years, Katarina wants to be working at a hospital or medical practice as a physician’s assistant. She considers the Cardio Phlebotomy program at BTC a stepping stone that is allowing her to achieve her ultimate goal of becoming a physician’s assistant, and she is thankful for the experience she has gained here.

When asked if she would refer Boardman Training Center to a friend, Katarina says “yes, the instructors are great but so are the admissions team. They make you feel welcome from the start.”

Katarina has some words of advice for incoming students at BTC. “Keep an open mind about the programs. Be patient with the process of learning everything and putting those skills to actual use. EKGs and punctures take time, but you will get it. Don’t feel like you’re the only one that doesn’t understand because there are others too.”

Student Highlight Boardman Training Center – Deirdre Turner

Deirdre Turner is working on obtaining her medical certification as a phlebotomist

through Boardman Training Center (BTC). Before attending Boardman Training Center, Deirdre went to school at Trumbull Business College in Warren, PA. She worked at General Motors but was laid off and realized that Trumbull was not the best fit for her. Deirdre wanted a more hands-on experience within her training.

Deirdre decided to enroll in classes at Boardman Training Center after speaking with an admission representative. She knew she wanted a career quickly and didn’t want to spend four years in college before entering the medical field. At BTC all of the classes were in the medical field, were small and personable, and offered the hands-on experience that Deirdre desired.

Deirdre stated, “One of my favorite parts of attending Boardman Training Center is that everyone is so friendly. I am getting the proper training I need to do the work.” Her favorite teacher is Dave Intro. Dave, along with other staff, takes the time to break down the materials so that it is easier to understand and comprehend.”

Deirdre enjoys Boardman Training so much that she has already referred her niece to the campus and is taking the courses with her. Deirdre’s ideal job is to work in an establishment that she loves while being able to provide for her family.
