BreannaMarie Slaven – Student Highlight

Meet BreannaMarie Slaven, our student highlight for this week!

BreannaMarie has always wanted a job in healthcare because working in the medical field runs in her family. Her mom has always worked in healthcare and her aunt is a phlebotomist, and she even has cousins who are doctors and nurses.

“I choose BTC because my cousin went here and she couldn’t help but brag about how good the school is and how friendly the environment truly is,” said BreannaMarie. She chose the Phlebotomy Technician program because her aunt is a phlebotomist and she wanted to follow in her footsteps.

Before enrolling in a fast track career training program at BTC, BreannaMarie attended a larger university. She says it was nice, but it didn’t give her what she wanted from a university.

BreannaMarie Slaven-Student Highlight

After growing up in the south, BreannaMarie moved to New Castle about a year ago. After moving to the local area, she began working in healthcare and trying to find her way for what she wants to do with her life.

BreannaMarie currently works at Homemakers Healthcare where she goes to people’s homes and checks in on them.

When BreannaMarie first came into Boardman Training Center, she wasn’t sure what all she wanted to do. She wants to eventually get into nursing and thinks the short-term career training at BTC will help get her there.

“My favorite part is how everyone helps you feel welcome and helps you reach your goals. Everyone helps you build your confidence up more,” said BreannaMarie.

BreannaMarie says she felt welcome as soon as she walked in the door and that BTC is the best school she has ever come to. She loves Nikki and Irene so much. She says she was not confident when she came here but they brought her out of her shell so much.

When asked who her favorite teacher is here at Boardman Training Center, BreannaMarie said, “I honestly don’t have a favorite teacher because they are all so helpful. They have made me want to reach my goals and have all played a role in my life that I will treasure forever.”

BreannaMarie already has a job lined up where her aunt currently works for after she completes the Phlebotomy Technician career training program at BTC. She says her ideal job is to work in a doctor’s office or even a hospital.

“I would like to move further into the healthcare field in the next five years,” said BreannaMarie. After a year or so of working she wants to continue her education. “It never hurts to have a lot under your belt,” she said.

BreannaMarie says she would recommend Boardman Training Center to friends. “Absolutely I would recommend BTC because they will help you as much as they can. I have never been to a school that showed you they want you to succeed as they do here. This is the best school I’ve been to,” said BreannaMarie.

BreannaMarie has some great advice for others. “Never give up on life! Just keep swimming!”

Healthcare workers are essential, and there’s no better time than now to start your career as an essential healthcare worker. With the continued growth of the healthcare field, it could be a great career option for you.

Figuring out the right path to starting an essential healthcare career can be confusing, so we’re sharing the steps with you!

Step 1: Choose a specific healthcare job

The first step to starting your career as an essential healthcare worker is to choose which specific job in the medical field you want to pursue. Today’s healthcare industry has a variety of career paths available for those who want to enter this exciting field. You could become a phlebotomist, medical assistant, medical office specialist, nurse, or even a doctor.

As you think about the specific job you want to do, there are a few questions to ask yourself that will help guide you to the right job choice.

  • What part of healthcare am I interested in?
  • What are my strengths and what am I good at?
  • What relevant experience do I already have?
  • How long do I want to attend school before I start working?

Choosing a career that you’re interested in and that aligns with your strengths will make your work more enjoyable. We all want to love going to work every day, so these questions are important to answer for yourself.

5 Steps to Starting an Essential Healthcare Career

Deciding how long you want to attend school before you start working will also help guide you toward your perfect healthcare job. While some schools are different, you will most likely need to complete a campus tour and meet with an admissions advisor. This is where you will learn more about the school, the program, and anything else you will need to be successful.

While attending your chosen training program, you will gain the knowledge, skills, and experience that you need to prepare for a career as an essential worker in healthcare. If you decided on a program that offers preparation for medical certifications, you will also prepare to sit for your certification exams.

We offer a variety of healthcare training program at Boardman Training Center to get you on the fast track to an essential healthcare career quickly. Katarina Lewis – Student Highlight

Meet Katarina Lewis, our student highlight for the week!

Like many people who want to start a career in healthcare, Katarina felt she needed to earn a professional medical certification to get a job. She chose Boardman Training Center to get on the fast track to a great healthcare career by preparing for a certification in just weeks.

“I heard a lot of good things about BTC and I really liked how quick the program was, which allowed me to become certified and find a job in a very reasonable amount of time,” said Katarina.

Katarina has always been interested in the medical field and chose the Cardio Phlebotomy program because she felt it would give her the hands-on experience she was looking for in a career training program.

Before enrolling at BTC, Katarina attended a larger university and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She says it was a great experience and she learned a lot, but she still needed a medical certification before she could get a job in healthcare.

Katarina Lewis-Student Highlight

After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Katarina started Cardio Phlebotomy classes at BTC one month later, because she wants to earn a certification and get finished with school as soon as possible.

Katarina is currently working as a Radiology Clerical Associate at Mercy Health-St. Elizabeth. In this role, she looks up test results and makes sure they are good, and then communicates the results of any that are not good to the next level up. She plays an important role in the healthcare team, working with patients, doctors, technicians, and nurses.

While attending Boardman Training Center, Katarina has had a great student experience. “The teachers are always here to help the students, which you can’t always find at other schools. They want you to succeed,” said Katarina.

Mike Giles from EKG has been Katarina’s favorite teacher because “he brought real-life stories to class every day, which made it entertaining and helped us learn the material.”

After graduating from BTC and earning her professional healthcare certification, Katarina hopes to work as a phlebotomist at an outpatient lab or a hospital lab. She says she is not too picky about her job, as long as she enjoys it.

In five years, Katarina wants to be working at a hospital or medical practice as a physician’s assistant. She considers the Cardio Phlebotomy program at BTC a stepping stone that is allowing her to achieve her ultimate goal of becoming a physician’s assistant, and she is thankful for the experience she has gained here.

When asked if she would refer Boardman Training Center to a friend, Katarina says “yes, the instructors are great but so are the admissions team. They make you feel welcome from the start.”

Katarina has some words of advice for incoming students at BTC. “Keep an open mind about the programs. Be patient with the process of learning everything and putting those skills to actual use. EKGs and punctures take time, but you will get it. Don’t feel like you’re the only one that doesn’t understand because there are others too.”

We’re Here for You Through COVID-19

As we all adapt to dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and the new normal, life has changed for each and every one of us in the last few weeks. From having our daily movements restricted, to homeschooling our kids, to the heroes on the front lines who are courageously battling the virus, we have all been affected.

At Boardman Training Center, we want our students, our community, and our future students to know that we are here for you and will support you in every way we can. We’re all in this fight together and we will get through it together.

Supporting BTC Students

At BTC, we think of ourselves as a family, and not just a school. Throughout this difficult and uncertain time, we continue to stay committed to our purpose, to empower change by creating opportunity.

We’re committed to supporting and serving our BTC family of students during the COVID-19 pandemic by offering live online classes that allow students to continue receiving the education and training necessary to begin a rewarding healthcare career. With this online remote classroom instruction, students can continue to work toward achieving their career goals.

In Ohio, educational institutions are considered essential businesses, so students can travel to campus to get distance learning materials or other related essential services. At the BTC campus, we’re taking every precaution necessary to ensure our facilities are sanitized and are operating under social distancing requirements. We understand that many students cannot travel to campus, so instructors are available to assist students remotely with anything they need.

Supporting Our Community

While we continue to support our students throughout this time, we are also highly invested in the local healthcare community and remain dedicated to serving it as best we can by providing the local workforce with qualified medical professionals.

With healthcare career training programs including Cardio Phlebotomy, EKG Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, and Medical Office Specialist, BTC graduates are on the front lines battling the COVID-19 virus by providing critical support to physician’s offices, hospitals, and clinics.

We pledge to continue to support community members and local healthcare teams by training and preparing critical healthcare workers who are essential during the pandemic.

Supporting Future Students

There have been many people and families negatively impacted because of COVID-19 and the mandatory restrictions on non-essential businesses. Many people have been laid off or lost their jobs and millions around the country have already applied for unemployment benefits.

We are a school with the purpose of empowering change by creating opportunity, so we believe that it’s our responsibility to help people get retrained, enabling them to go back to work. To allow people to begin working toward a meaningful healthcare career, we are now offering virtual campus visits for all potential students. We hope this will provide the opportunity for those who have been negatively affected to start their path to a more secure career.

This time of uncertainty can be especially hard for high school seniors who are making decisions about what to do after graduation. We encourage all high school seniors to explore our career training programs that allow you to get on the fast track to a successful and rewarding healthcare career.

Sarah Borngesser – Student Highlight

We are excited to feature our student highlight for the week, Sarah Borngesser!

Sarah is enrolled in the EKG Technician and Phlebotomy Technician programs at Boardman Training Center. She started classes in September 2018, and she loves BTC and the positive atmosphere that you feel as soon as you walk in the door.

Sarah Borngesser

Before deciding to attend classes at BTC, Sarah says she was working at a call center and pretty upset with her life, because she wasn’t doing anything for her future. “BTC gave me meaning to my life,” says Sarah.

“I chose BTC because it was a small campus, close to home, with small class sizes and career-driven classes,” says Sarah. After meeting with Nikki Granger, Admission Advisor, she knew BTC was the right choice.

Sarah had previously attended a university in Florida for a short time, but says it was very stressful, with big classes and a lot of people.

At Boardman Training Center, Sarah is on the fast-track to a great healthcare career with small class sizes, personalized attention, and short-term programs.

Sarah has worked in the front office in healthcare and always wanted to get more into the clinical aspects of the medical field. She chose the EKG Technician and Phlebotomy Technician programs to get the experience needed for her hands-on healthcare career.

“My favorite part of attending BTC is the staff. I love Stephen because he makes learning easy and fun, and Nikki has always helped me too,” says Sarah. Medical Assisting is her favorite class because she loves the hands-on, clinical part.

Sarah’s parents are very supportive of her! Her mom has worked in the healthcare field for 30 years as a medical assistant. As a child, Sarah would go on car rides with her mom while she traveled around to draw blood from patients, and always thought it was very exciting!

Sarah recommends BTC to everyone and is always sharing her positive experience with others. “I was not happy with my life before attending BTC, but they made me feel like what I want to do is possible,” says Sarah.

Miranda is enrolled in the Cardio-Phlebotomy program and is having a great experience with her medical training classes at Boardman Training Center.

Before enrolling with BTC, Miranda attended a community college to earn an EMT certificate. She says it was an exciting, eventful, and challenging experience, but she was not able to get the experience she wanted.

Miranda Washington

“I heard great things about this training center. I also appreciated the daylight classes and hours, and am excited about the hands-on experience,” says Miranda. Boardman Training Center was recommended to her by a family member to get on the fast track to a great medical career.

Miranda choose the Cardio-Phlebotomy program because she wanted to take the steps needed to pursue a great career in the medical field.  She would love to work in a hospital lab setting and eventually wants to become a nurse.

Learning new things and making new friends is Miranda’s favorite part of attending classes at Boardman Training Center. She loves that everyone is so nice and on the same page with a similar mindset to hers.

With such a busy life, she loves that she can take her classes three days a week. “If someone has a busy life, then BTC is for them,” says Miranda.

“It’s nice to go to school with other people who have the same fears as you, so you know you’re not alone. There is support in the classroom here,” says Miranda.

The Value of Medical Certifications

The need for certified professionals in the medical and healthcare industry is increasing as more employers are using certifications to determine whether someone has the skills and knowledge necessary to complete a specific job.

The Value of Medical Certifications

As you decide on the best career path for you, professional medical certifications can be a great investment in your future.

There are many benefits to earning medical certifications. Read on as we share them with you!

Certifications Help You Get Hired

The most important benefit of earning a medical certification is that they can help you get hired. Employers like hospitals, labs, and other medical facilities value certifications because they show that you have the skills necessary to get the job done. Certifications make you stand out over applicants that are not certified, making you more marketable to employers.

Professional medical certifications open the door to more jobs and increase your opportunity for career advancement because earning a certification gives you the stamp of excellence that employers are looking for in candidates.

The Phlebotomy Technician program at Boardman Training Center prepares you for employment at medical facilities such as physician offices, surgical centers, labs, and hospitals.

Certifications Show That You’re Qualified

Imagine going to the hospital and having your blood drawn by someone who has never done it before. No one wants to do that! For this reason, in the medical field, many employees need to be certified to perform their jobs.

Earning a professional medical certification shows potential employers that you have met the standards established by the third-party organization that created the certification. Employers will know that you are qualified and have the skills needed to perform the job.

Certifications Stay Current in Your Profession

Technology and best practices change over time, so earning a certification will help you stay current in the medical field. Medical employers want to hire only the best, and certifications show who is ready to perform the job to the most up-to-date standards.

For example, our EKG Technician program at Boardman Training Center is based on current industry standards and includes preparation for the Certified EKG Technician certification.

Certifications are Recognized by Many Employers

Certifications are administered by third-party organizations. This creates high standards. As such, there are many medical and healthcare employers that require certified professionals. This means that once you have earned a certification, it is valid and recognized by many different medical facilities, giving you more options when applying for jobs and advancing in your career.

Gain the Confidence to Succeed

When you practice something over and over, you are sure to get better at it. That’s why many medical certifications require you to have hands-on skills to earn that credential.

Gaining the necessary skills, experience, and knowledge needed to earn a medical certification can give you the extra confidence boost to excel in your healthcare career. Having more confidence when applying for jobs, in the interview, and on the job will help you succeed!

At Boardman Training Center, we offer in-demand programs like Cardio Phlebotomy, EKG Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, and Medical Office Specialist that prepare you for professional medical certifications.

With small class sizes, short-term programs, and flexible financing options, we’re here to help you start your great career now. Request information today to learn more!

Danielle Larosa – Employee Highlight

Danielle Larosa

Danielle Larosa is the Campus Director at Boardman Training Center located in Boardman, Ohio. Danielle started the campus over six years ago in April of 2013. The training center began holding classes in the local Boardman High School which happened to be the high school Danielle attended. The campus now offers multiple 24-week programs with numerous staff members.

Prior to working at Boardman Training Center, Danielle started her career as a paramedic and attended Youngstown State University to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and an Associate Degree in Allied Health.  As a young child, Danielle lost her step-father, and her mom was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Danielle grew up at a young age and took pride in helping with her Mom’s medical needs and also enjoyed taking care of her younger siblings. Many people may think this was a burden, but Danielle embraced the challenge. “My experiences as a young adult helped me to become a more compassionate, caring person that enjoyed caring for people of all ages while teaching younger individuals about important aspects of life. I truly feel that my love for being a paramedic, working in the health field and teaching were all influenced by my experiences as a child and young adult.” Danielle loved working in the paramedic field so much that she became a Preceptor for Youngstown State’s University Paramedic Program as a skilled lab instructor after graduation. As much as Danielle enjoyed her time working for the paramedic program, a back injury and the birth of her children resulted in her making a career change and becoming a cardiac technician.

Ultimately, after a few years, Danielle missed teaching and encouraging students. When the opportunity to create a program from scratch came along, Danielle was up for the challenge.  Now, six years later the Boardman Training Center is thriving and Danielle loves connecting with the students by bringing her life experiences in the classroom. She wants each student to know that they are not alone, things happen, life gets in the way, but they can do anything they put their mind too!
