Amar’ia Yates – Student Highlight

Meet Amar’ia Yates, our student highlight feature this week at Boardman Training Center!

Like many people who have just graduated high school, Amar’ia was unsure what she wanted to do next. It can be challenging to choose the one that’s right for you with so many different options.

“I’d just finished high school a few months before. I was working in fast food and retail, and I wasn’t happy,” Amar’ia said. “I had a sense of what I wanted out of life, but I just wasn’t sure where to start.”

After looking at the options available to continue her education, Amar’ia decided she wanted a fast-track healthcare training program that gives you the skills you need and is affordable.

Amar'ia Yates-Student Highlight

“The staff is wonderful. They’ve worked with me, and for once, I felt as someone other than me and my family cared about my education,” said Amar’ia on her decision to attend Boardman Training Center.

She chose to enroll in the Cardio Phlebotomy program, which trains students in just 24 weeks for entry-level opportunities in the healthcare field.

“I choose my program because I wanted to get my foot in the door for a medical career and so I can feel useful to other people in the world,” said Amar’ia.

In the Cardio Phlebotomy training program, Amar’ia will learn and practice specialized skills to use on the job when she starts her new healthcare career. Performing EKGs, drawing blood, completing venipuncture procedures, and practicing patient care are some of the valuable skills Amar’ia will develop as she completes the program.

When asked about her favorite part of attending Boardman Training Center, Amar’ia had great things to say about the staff. “My favorite part of BTC would be the staff there. No one wants to see you fail. They’re like your second family. If you’re having a hard time, they’ll do everything they can to assist you and get you where you need to be,” said Amar’ia.

Amar’ia says that she can’t choose who her favorite teacher or class is just yet, since she has only finished one course. However, she will say that Ms. Sandy, the instructor of her Intro to Healthcare class, was wonderful. “She made class interesting while still teaching me and my fellow classmates. She always pushed into our heads that we can do this, that we’re going to finish strong, and how proud she was of us.”

After she completes the Cardio Phlebotomy program and graduates, Amar’ia would like to work in a hospital, blood bank, or nursing home.

In addition to working in a healthcare facility, Amar’ia would like to further her education in the medical field and enroll in a program or be looking into programs within five years.

When asked if she would recommend Boardman Training Center to a friend, Amar’ia said, “Of course I would refer a friend, because if you’re like me and didn’t really know where to start, BTC is a great place to start. If you’re like my fellow classmates, looking to further your education, or you want to get back into the medical field, choose BTC, and let BTC choose you and meet your goals.”

Maybe you are just like Amar’ia, a little unsure of what to do next and how to get started in a healthcare career. Or perhaps you are like her classmates, who want to take the next step and further their healthcare training and education. Whatever your unique situation may be, Boardman Training Center is here to help!

Mikalena Grewe – Student Highlight

Meet Mikalena Grewe, our student highlight feature for this week at Boardman Training Center!

As a current student in the Cardio Phlebotomy program, Mikalena is completing her healthcare training classes, preparing for a new career that will allow her to help people and make a difference every day.

“I chose BTC because of the one-on-one environment you get. The classes are smaller, so each student is more likely to have one-on-one help from the teachers. I was also happy with the pricing of the classes and the classes they offer being a steppingstone into the medical field to be able to further my career one day,” said Mikalena.

Before enrolling with BTC, Mikalena was unsure of what to do and what direction she wanted to go. She had previously attended a larger university after high school, and while she loved the college environment, she wasn’t in love with her major of high school education. Education allowed her to help students but didn’t give her the same feeling as working in the medical field.

“I was struggling to decide if I wanted to further my education at a university, taking out more student loans and not knowing where in the medical field I wanted to be, or going back to a career center and being a CNA again,” said Mikalena.

Mikalena Grewe-Student Highlight

After deciding that she wanted to pursue a career in healthcare and choosing to enroll with Boardman Training Center, Mikalena started school in the Cardio Phlebotomy career training program.

“I picked the Cardio Phlebotomy program because of how much education I would receive, and by having certifications in both EKG and phlebotomy, I would have better job opportunities,” she said.

While enrolled in the Cardio Phlebotomy program, students have the opportunity to train for a new healthcare career in only 24 weeks, practicing hands-on skills that will be used on the job. Performing EKGs, drawing blood, and carrying out venipuncture procedures are just some of the hands-on skills students learn in this exciting program.

At Boardman Training Center, we love providing our students with a supportive and caring environment that feels more like a family than a school.

“My favorite part of BTC is that after so many weeks, the students in your classes and the instructors start to become a family. You are working together to help one another become successful in the field. Each student and staff member is rooting for you. I have met people I hope to have in my life for years to come,” said Mikalena.

So far, Mikalena’s favorite class has been phlebotomy. Due to COVID-19, the classes have been broken into groups, and her instructor Nikki has been great. “She is always encouraging and willing to help whenever students need her,” said Mikalena. She is also very thankful for Sandy, her instructor for the intro class. “Even after intro ended, I’ve been able to text her to ask questions or call when needed. I’m grateful that BTC has such amazing teachers.”

After graduation, Mikalena hopes to work in a hospital as a phlebotomist. in five years, her goal is to save enough money to go back to school to become a CT or MRI technician.

When asked if she would refer Boardman Training Center to a friend, Mikalena said, “Yes, I would refer a friend to BTC because of the affordable price and the friendly people they would meet along the way.”

Shaun McCune – Graduate Highlight

Meet Shaun McCune, our graduate student highlight for this week at Boardman Training Center!

Like many students who attend BTC, Shaun wanted a quick and affordable way to get the training he needs to begin working in the healthcare field. “I was considering going into the medical field, and BTC offered an affordable way to start working in this field. I also prefer having live, on-campus classes instead of a purely online course,” said Shaun.

Shaun enrolled in the Cardio Phlebotomy program at BTC and is on the fast-track to starting his new career. When deciding on which program to attend, Shaun thought both EKG and phlebotomy seemed interesting, which is what led him to the Cardio Phlebotomy classes that include both. Shaun also thought that completing training in multiple areas sounded like a great way to keep job prospects open.

Before enrolling at Boardman Training Center, Shaun attended a larger university and earned a Bachelor of Music in guitar performance. While Shaun learned a lot more than he expected about music and guitar, he said he could not make a good living with that degree.

Shaun McCune - Graduate Highlight

Shaun also worked at a shipping facility before deciding to attend BTC. He enjoyed the job there but did not want to pursue a career in freight services. Instead, he wanted to start a career in the healthcare field.

When asked what his favorite part of attending BTC was, Shaun said it is “getting to know the instructors and staff who have been very open to my questions and future possibilities.”

Shaun said that Mrs. Irene was a very engaging teacher, and EKG has been a super interesting topic to learn about, adding that he has found that cardiac rhythms have similarities with his music training.

“I have been fortunate to have already landed an EKG Monitor Tech position at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown. Gaining hospital experience while having full-time hours and benefits is a big plus,” said Shaun.

In the future, Shaun hopes to continue his training in the healthcare field by going into cardiac sonography. He believes that having experience with EKGs is very applicable to diagnostic imaging of the heart. Shaun also feels that there is something satisfying about working with rhythms and sound waves.

When asked if he would recommend Boardman Training Center to a friend, Shaun said, “yes, especially if the individual wants to go into medicine but does not know where to start.” For example, Shaun said that someone who wants to go into nursing could start working in healthcare as a phlebotomist and then find an employer that offers tuition assistance to complete a nursing program.

“I found the teachers and staff to be very supportive and flexible. They are extremely helpful with the hands-on, stressful elements of phlebotomy. They are very passionate about seeing me achieve my goals and start a new career,” said Shaun.

Just like Shaun has done, you can start your path to a new medical field career with healthcare classes at Boardman Training Center! Explore our healthcare programs in Cardio Phlebotomy, EKG Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, and Medical Office Specialist today.

Kharley is currently enrolled in the Medical Office Specialist program and has already completed the Cardio Phlebotomy program to get on the fast track to a new career in the healthcare field. She chose these Boardman Training Center programs for many reasons that are important to her and her future.

Kharley says she chose to complete cardio phlebotomy and medical office classes “to get better job opportunities, such as better pay and benefits, and also because I have always loved the health field and helping people.”

Before enrolling at Boardman Training Center, Kharley attended a larger university for hospitality management but then realized that field did not have the opportunities she was looking for, especially in the local area. The cost of tuition was also too high.

In addition to attending college, Kharley also works at a restaurant while completing her healthcare career training at BTC. “I always thought maybe the restaurant I worked for would be a good career, but then I realized I was settling for less,” said Kharley.

How to Choose the Right Career Training Program for You

We all excel at something we enjoy doing or things we are naturally talented in, so selecting a career path that is similar to our talents or the things we enjoy, will help create a more fulfilling career. There are many different options to choose from and sometimes this can be a little mind-boggling as you try to make the best decision.

There are some important steps to take when planning your career path. Setting time aside to create your career goals and finding out the job requirements, as well as searching for the most relevant and helpful training programs, are the right steps to get you into the career of your dreams. This week, we will look at some options that will help you make great career decisions.

Set Your Career Goals

There may be a goal you have in mind, like starting a career as a nurse, or you may require further guidance to help you figure things out. If you are undecided, here are a few questions to help with your thought process, as you create your own personal goals.

  • Why do you want to start a new career? Think about what fuels your passion to work within that specific field. Does motivation come through your family members? Would you like to improve your future or way of life? Are you self-motivated? Or are there other reasons?
  • What are you looking for in a new career? To decide which goals are a best-fit, it is important to understand what you would like to achieve from your career path. Would you prefer a high paying salary that gives you better security? Do you need more flexible working hours to create a better work-life balance? Are you motivated to work in a field where you are able to help others? Is working from home a top priority?
  • What areas are you interested in? Do you have any natural talents that will help you on your career path? Are you into technology? Do you enjoy interacting with others? Whatever your decision, select something that you excel at naturally.
  • Do you plan to continue advancing your career? Creating a plan of action will help you get to your chosen career path and advance. You can begin with the basics, then work your way up in the working world.
  • Where do you want to be in five years? You need to visualize where you want to be in the long run. In order to meet your career goals, you must have an idea of the end result. Would you like a new car or a dream home? Maybe you want to start a college fund for your child? Visualizing these results will continue to motivate you as you go.

Once you’ve completed your list of answers, you will be on the right track to creating a future you will thrive in. Always remember the goals you set should be SMART goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely.

Take a look at this SMART career goal example: I want to start a career as a phlebotomy technician in Boardman within one year.

Determine Your Needs

You’ve successfully determined your goals, and now it’s time to think about what you need to achieve them. Each career path is different and will have different training requirements to help you get there.

In this stage, examine the job descriptions for the careers you are interested in pursuing. If you want to become a medical office specialist, take a look at the vacancies within your city for that role. What educational background do candidates need to have in order to apply? Is a license or certification mandatory? Do they require previous experience? When you are done reviewing the job descriptions and requirements, make a list of the things that are most relevant. This list is exactly what you need to qualify for the job.

It’s important to take note of the job qualifications, and it’s equally important to understand the option that works best for you. Here are some additional questions to help guide you.

  • What is your learning style? Everyone retains information in different ways and the way we remember this information is linked to our specific learning style. Some people learn better when they hear about a topic, while others are more attentive when they are reading. Some prefer to learn with the practical approach of completing a task and seeing the outcome themselves. Finding your learning style will help improve the career training choices you make.
  • What is your personality type? Our personality traits also affect how we retain information. Try taking a personality test like the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator. This could help you learn more about yourself and how you can best utilize your learning style.

You now have the checklist of requirements you need in order to choose the best career training classes for you.

Research Career Training Options

Now it’s time to research the variety of career training program options that are available and choose the one that fits you best. In order to understand the options, you need to explore the programs that will help you meet your career goals and work with your specific learning style.

  • Does the program train you for the specific job you want? Do you recall that list you made based on job descriptions? We created it for this question. Take that list and do a comparison of the career training programs you are considering. Does it provide you with the knowledge and skills required? Do you prepare for professional certifications? Does the program timeframe align with your career goals? Will it help you advance in your career?
  • Is the school aligned with your needs? The next step to take, is to determine which school will be the best institution to meet your needs. Here are a few questions you can ask for guidance. Is there a dedicated admissions advisor that will help you understand the requirements for the application process? Are flexible financing options offered? Is the teaching style aligned to your learning style? Do students get personalized instruction?
  • What support is offered to students? You need to be aware of how the school will support you as a student and also after you’ve completed your career training. Here are a few questions to ask. Is the environment supportive for students? Is additional help and tutoring offered if needed? Are there any services available that will continue to be offered even after graduation?

When you have reviewed the options, assess the pros and cons by making a list to help you decide. After you’ve evaluated the career training options, you can confidently make a selection that will allow you to have a successful career.

Ishmael Ragin – Student Highlight

Meet Ishmael Ragin, our student highlight feature for this week!

Ishmael is enrolled in the Phlebotomy Technician program at Boardman Training Center. He began classes in May 2019 to get on the fast track to a rewarding healthcare career.

Before attending BTC, Ishmael went to a larger university and found that it was very big, with a lot of walking around to classes. He had majored in psychology, which is what his mother did, and was following in her footsteps. Ishmael realized that this was not the path for him and became interested in what he could do in the medical field.

Ishmael Ragin-Student Highlight

Ishmael also works in the food industry but wants to have a career and not just a job. He says it’s an easy job, but there is only so far you can move up.

When asked why he chose Boardman Training Center to jump-start his healthcare career, Ishmael said it was because of “the location, class sizes, and the field of choice.”

After his experience at a larger university, Ishmael really wanted a smaller school where he could come and learn. He loves the phlebotomy classes because they are hands-on and not straight out of a book.

“It was something I see myself enjoying,” said Ishmael when asked why he chose the Phlebotomy Technician career training program. He wanted to go somewhere that enabled him to gain employment in the local area, because his family is here.

Ishmael says that his favorite parts of attending BTC are “the people, classmates, teachers, and instructors.” He has made a lot of friends in his classes and really gotten to know his instructors.

“Phlebotomy is my favorite class because it’s so hands-on and informative,” said Ishmael. So far in his student experience at BTC, Irene has been his favorite teacher.

After graduation, Ishmael would like to work as a Lab Technician or a Phlebotomy Technician in a hospital or lab setting. He has already begun looking at jobs to start his career in the medical field after he completes the Phlebotomy Technician career training program.

When asked where he would like his life to be in five years, Ishmael said he would like to be the highest paid professional in the field. He is interested in potentially going into medical coding eventually. He says he will go as far as he can in his career with the phlebotomy certification.

When asked if he would refer BTC to a friend, Ishmael responded, “Yes. It’s just as informative as a university but has the class size that makes it easier to learn.”

Budgeting 101

Whether you’re saving for the future or just need to know where all your money is going, budgeting effectively can help. As an essential aspect of personal finance, budgeting is important for everyone because it can help you reach your financial goals, regardless of how much money you have now.

Creating and maintaining a budget has many benefits including better financial security, a higher credit score, and less debt. But how do you create an effective budget to reach your financial goals? Keep reading and find out our top budgeting tips!

Budgeting 101

Create a Monthly Budget

In order to know exactly how much money you’re receiving and spending each month, the first thing you need to do is create a monthly budget. Begin by adding up all the money you receive each month from things like jobs, side work, child support, and any other source. For jobs, be sure to use your after-tax pay, as this is what you can actually spend.

The next step is to list out and add up all your monthly expenses. This part can seem challenging if you have never created a budget before. To start, gather all your monthly bills, bank statements, and credit card statements, and list everything you spend money on, along with the monthly amount spent on each item. The personal finance experts at Credit.org recommend tracking these expenses:

  • Housing – mortgage, rent, insurance
  • Utilities – electricity, gas, water, sewage
  • Car – car payment, insurance, gas
  • Loans – credit card bills, student loans
  • Amenities – phone, internet, subscriptions
  • Medical – medical bills, health insurance
  • Necessities – household products, clothing
  • Groceries – food, pet food
  • Entertainment – dining out, activities, gifts
  • Miscellaneous – unknown expenses

Now that you’ve added in your monthly expenses, you need to account for any quarterly, bi-annual, and annual expenses you have. Since you don’t pay these expenses monthly, you have to save for them throughout the year to ensure you have enough money to pay them. For example, if you pay your home insurance once per year, divide the total amount by 12 and add it to your monthly budget, and be sure to save the correct amount each month!

Now that you’ve listed and calculated your total income and expenses, you need a way to track them. Using a spreadsheet, notebook, or whatever you’re most comfortable with, make a chart that lists all income on one side and all expenses on the other side. Add up the total amount for each and then subtract your monthly expenses from your monthly income. If you have extra money each month after paying your expenses, that would be great to put in savings. If you don’t have enough money to cover your monthly expenses, you will need to lower your expenses or increase your income.

Needs vs Wants

As you list out all the things you spend money on, thinking about each item and determining if it’s a need or a want is essential to maintaining an effective budget. You can easily tell the difference between the two categories because needs are things you actually need to live, such as housing, clothing, and food. Wants are things that you don’t actually need, but are nice to have, such as entertainment, dining out, and vacations.

One important reason to categorize your expenses into needs and wants, is that if you have to lower your expenses, you will have to reduce your wants.

Track Your Actual Spending

After creating your monthly budget, you will need to track your actual spending moving forward. This allows you to identify whether or not you’re spending within your budget, and lets you know if any changes need to be made.

The quickest and easiest way to do this is with free software like Mint, which is a budget planner and spending tracker. If you prefer, you can also manually review your bank and credit card statements on a monthly basis to calculate your actual spending.

Now that you have your monthly budget and are tracking your actual spending, you will need to compare the two on a monthly basis to determine if you need to make adjustments to either. As an example, if you find you are spending more on eating out than you budgeted for, you may need to decrease the number of times per month that you go to restaurants.

Save for Your Future

Starting a savings account that you add to regularly is important for your future needs and wants. Investing in your education, going on your dream vacation, and buying your first home are all great goals for your savings.

To make saving easier for you, look at it like it’s a bill that you’re paying to your future self. Decide on the exact amount that you want to save each month and add it to your monthly budget.

Put Your Career On the Fast Track

Erika Norris – Student Highlight

We are excited to announce our student highlight feature for this week, Erika Norris!

Erika Norris-Student Highlight

Like many Boardman Training Center students, Erika wants a career that allows her to make a difference and help people in their daily lives, but she doesn’t want to spend 4-6 years in school taking unnecessary classes to get there.

This led Erika to BTC, because she needed a fast track career training program that prepares her for what she’ll be doing when she graduates.

“I choose BTC because I want to be in the medical field. I want to help people and BTC helps me do that without all the extra time and money for classes I don’t need,” said Erika.

Before enrolling with BTC, Erika was just working in a job, not in a career field that she loves. Erika said she choose the Cardio Phlebotomy program because “in 24 quick weeks, I could be doing something I love.”

Erika had previously attended college at a larger university, which left her feeling a little lost. “I have gone to college before and it wasn’t for me honestly. Most of my classes were too big, with too much going on, and a lot of classes I didn’t need,” said Erika.

Erika said her favorite part of attending Boardman Training Center is the hands-on experience. Her favorite class is Phlebotomy, where she is learning valuable skills she will use in her career. So far, Erika said her favorite teacher is Mike.

After completing her career training program at BTC, Erika hopes to become a Phlebotomist, helping one patient at a time, and to continue growing in her career for years to come.

When asked if she would refer Boardman Training Center to a friend, Erika happily said yes! “I absolutely would. The people here have been nothing but nice to me and really want to see everyone succeed,” said Erika.
