Michele Nutt – Student Highlight

Meet Michele Nutt, our student highlight feature for this week here at Boardman Training Center!

Michele is currently enrolled in the Medical Office Specialist program and is preparing for a fulfilling career in the healthcare field. She has already completed the Cardio Phlebotomy career training program and decided to continue her education by enrolling in an additional program that will train her in various added medical office skills.

Michele Nutt - Student Highlight

Before deciding to attend BTC, Michele was a housewife and stay-at-home mom for 16 years. “My husband works on the railroad for Norfolk Southern, and I have been home raising our two daughters, which are now in high school!”

Michele previously attended school in 1987 for medical assisting and says her experience was rewarding because she earned a medical assisting certification while in the program.

After being home with her kids for years, Michele was ready to go back to school to earn professional healthcare certifications*. She chose Boardman Training Center because “the class schedule was convenient and worked well with my girls’ extracurricular activities.”

“I enjoyed medical assisting and especially phlebotomy when I was in the field. What is extra special about BTC is that I have the opportunity to become an EKG technician as well,” said Michele.

Michele says that being an adult learner and going back to school after so many years was scary for her, but that Boardman Training Center made her feel confident and knowledgeable again. “I am proud of myself. I have a new purpose to look forward to and a new sense of self after raising my girls. BTC made me feel welcome and safe in a comfortable learning environment,” said Michele.

When asked who is her favorite teacher at Boardman Training Center, Michele said, “I would have to say without a doubt my favorite teacher is Sandy Poynter. She has made me feel welcome and has been the most helpful teacher I have ever had. I feel comfortable to ask for help.”

So far, Michele’s favorite class has been phlebotomy, but she says that overall, she has liked all her classes.

After completing her healthcare training programs at BTC, Michele would like to work a Monday through Friday job that allows her to enjoy her girls and their high school years and sports.

In five years, Michele says she would like to be working in a doctor’s office with amazing coworkers as a team. She wants to feel like she has an extended family at work.

When asked if she would refer Boardman Training Center to a friend, Michele said yes. “I absolutely would recommend BTC to anyone interested in becoming a phlebotomist, a medical assistant, or an EKG technician. The billing and coding certification* is a nice bonus as well.”

“I would like to thank the staff at BTC for all the help and understanding over this past year with COVID restrictions, online school, and anything in between. They are always helpful and courteous,” said Michele.

The MOS program also prepares students for additional healthcare certifications, including Certified Medical Administrative Assistant*, Certified Billing and Coding Specialist*, and Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist*.

Explore Our Program

To enroll in fall classes, the first thing you need to do is choose which healthcare training program works best for you. To make this decision easier, there are a few questions you can ask yourself: do I want to work in a medical office, do I want to work with patients directly, and are there any specific skills I want to learn?
How to Enroll for Fall Classes

For students who want to learn how to draw blood, our Phlebotomy Technician program may be the right choice for you. As a phlebotomist, you will draw blood to collect medical specimens that help doctors gain insight into a patient’s health. While enrolled in their phlebotomy classes, students will learn procedures for specimen collection, skin puncture techniques, basic phlebotomy skills, and how to use specimen collection equipment correctly. The phlebotomy training program prepares students for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)* exam, which sets phlebotomy students up for success in their future careers.

If you want to learn how to perform an electrocardiogram, our EKG Technician program may be the better choice for you. As an EKG technician, you will measure heart rhythms that provide critical information on heart health and potential heart conditions. As a student in EKG classes, you will learn things like identifying normal and abnormal EKG recordings, using a heart monitor, describing the normal physiology of cardiac conduction, and distinguishing between basic dysrhythmias. While enrolled in the EKG program, students prepare to sit for the Certified EKG Technician (CET)* exam.

For students who want to learn a combination of both phlebotomy and EKG skills, our Cardio Phlebotomy program may work best for you. As a cardio phlebotomy technician, you have the opportunity to work directly with patients, helping doctors to provide excellent care. As students complete their cardio phlebotomy classes, they are trained in various areas, including performing EKGs, drawing blood, completing venipuncture procedures, controlling infections, and practicing fundamental patient care. The cardio phlebotomy program prepares students for professional healthcare certifications, including Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)* and Certified EKG Technician (CET)*.

If you want to learn various skills that train you to work in a medical office, our Medical Office Specialist program may be the right decision for you. Medical office professionals have the opportunity to perform both administrative tasks and care for patients while on the job. Students enrolled in medical office classes will learn various skills, including recording vital signs, patient intake, charting, collection of laboratory specimens, injections, suture removal, and basic wound care. While in the medical office program, students prepare for healthcare certifications including Certified Medical Administrative Assistant*, Certified Billing and Coding Specialist*, and Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist*.

Courtney Preston – Student Highlight

Meet Courtney Preston, this week’s student highlight here at Boardman Training Center!

As a current student in the Cardio-Phlebotomy program, Courtney is gaining essential knowledge and practicing the hands-on skills she needs to succeed in a career in the healthcare field.

Courtney Preston-Student Highlight

“I have always liked the medical field, and I wanted to get back into it without having to go to school for another 1-2 years,” said Courtney.

Before deciding to enroll in cardio phlebotomy classes at Boardman Training Center, Courtney attended a number of other schools, including a larger university, a college, and a beauty school. Although she says she liked all three, she knew she was capable of more and wanted to get back into the medical field. Courtney also works in a beauty shop and does makeup for weddings and special events.

After deciding to get back into the medical field, Courtney looked around for phlebotomy schools and chose BTC. “I decided this was the best one,” she said.

While enrolled in her cardio phlebotomy training classes, Courtney will practice valuable skills, such as performing EKGs, drawing blood, caring for patients, and completing venipuncture procedures. She will also prepare for two professional healthcare certifications, including Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)* and Certified EKG Technician (CET)*.

When asked what her favorite part of attending Boardman Training Center is, Courtney said, “my friends that I have made here make every day I’m here that much more enjoyable, and the knowledge I have gained is a plus!”

Courtney is having a great experience with her instructors, especially her phlebotomy teacher Elyse. “She is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. She goes above and beyond to teach us. The knowledge I gained from her is amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better teacher.”

After she completes her career training classes and graduates from BTC, Courtney’s ideal job is to work in a lab or hospital setting, drawing blood or being an EKG technician. She believes these are good career opportunities for her since she is preparing for certifications in those areas as part of her training.

Courtney has wonderful and ambitious goals for her future. “In five years, I would like to be very successful and knowledgeable in the field I choose, knowing that I have accomplished something to make my life better in the long run,” said Courtney.

When asked if she would refer BTC to a friend, Courtney said, “yes, I have felt very welcome from day one, and the knowledge you get within a short amount of time is worth it.”

Kharley Calabrese – Student Highlight

Meet Kharley Calabrese, our Boardman Training Center student highlight feature for this week!

Kharley is currently enrolled in the Medical Office Specialist program and has already completed the Cardio Phlebotomy program to get on the fast track to a new career in the healthcare field. She chose these Boardman Training Center programs for many reasons that are important to her and her future.

Kharley says she chose to complete cardio phlebotomy and medical office classes “to get better job opportunities, such as better pay and benefits, and also because I have always loved the health field and helping people.”

Before enrolling at Boardman Training Center, Kharley attended a larger university for hospitality management but then realized that field did not have the opportunities she was looking for, especially in the local area. The cost of tuition was also too high.

In addition to attending college, Kharley also works at a restaurant while completing her healthcare career training at BTC. “I always thought maybe the restaurant I worked for would be a good career, but then I realized I was settling for less,” said Kharley.

Kharley Calabrese -Student Highlight

As Kharley realized that she wanted more for herself than her current job could offer, she made the decision to take her career to the next level by preparing for a job in the medical field.

She chose Boardman Training Center to fast-track her way to an exciting new career for a variety of reasons. “The prices were affordable, and the classes were great for my work schedule. Also, the classes were smaller, which is better for learning,” said Kharley.

Kharley is having a great experience as a student at BTC while completing her healthcare classes and training for a new career. “It is like my home away from home! The teachers are awesome and so are my peers,” said Kharley.

So far, Kharley says that Irene and Sandy have been her favorite teachers because they care about the students and make sure all your concerns and questions are answered.

After graduation, Kharley wants to work as a MA in a physician’s office or hospital. In five years, Kharley would love to have a well-established career in the medical field and possibly furthering her education.

When asked if she would refer BTC to a friend, Kharley said, “yes, because it’s affordable, the programs give you great job opportunities, and the instructors and staff are amazing!”

The Benefits of Choosing a Small School

With a clear idea of the career path you want to take, it’s time to make that idea come to life. For most career opportunities, you will need formal training to be eligible for jobs in the career field of your choice.

There are many options to attend school and complete a career training program to help you on your new journey. You could select a larger university, try an online college option, or attend a small school. Each option will offer a different learning experience for students.

For a lot of people, attending a small school can make a big difference in their success story, during their career training program, and after graduation. Keep reading to find out more, as we share the benefits of selecting a small-school environment to get the training you need in preparation for your awesome career path.

Small Class Sizes

A direct benefit of being in a small-school environment is linked to the class sizes. On average, there are fewer students in each class in a small-school setting. This means there won’t be large lecture halls filled with 300+ people just listening to the lecturer talk.

When you attend a smaller school, it allows you to connect more with your instructors and classmates, and you will not be just seen as another number in the crowd. People will actually know your name and get to know you on a more personal level.

If you select a career training program that prepares you to work in a certain field, such as the Medical Office Specialist program here at Boardman Training Center, you will learn hands-on skills that will be beneficial to you as you begin working in your new career. The more practice you get with these hands-on skills, the better you will get at them.

Students who choose Boardman Training Center to train for a new career will also prepare to sit for professional medical certifications* while in their healthcare training program.

Personalized Attention

In addition to enjoying smaller classes, another great benefit of completing your career training at a small school, is that you will get personalized attention, which will help you do your best as you complete your program.

In a large university setting, you would be in classes with hundreds of people, and would get very limited time to interact with your instructors, because there isn’t enough time for professors to connect with every student. On the other hand, a small-school setting where teachers have more time for each student, allows you to receive the one-on-one interaction you need to excel in your classes.

At a small school, teachers are also more available outside the classroom, which means you will get direct assistance and help when you need it.

At Boardman Training Center, we offer a small-school environment designed to help you every step of the way. You’ll be part of our BTC family that engages you with personalized attention, while helping you reach your career goals. With our WE CARE approach to career training, your teachers will support and encourage you along your journey to a new career.

Student Support

As a student in a small-school environment, an additional benefit you will enjoy is the opportunity to get further assistance and support as needed while completing your career training classes. At Boardman Training Center, we provide academic support like tutoring and study services that will help you in your healthcare classes.

Other services provided in addition to great academic support, are the career services offered that help you get a head start in the job application process to begin your new career. Helping students create resumes and cover letters are just one example of the valuable career services offered here at Boardman Training Center.

Students who choose a small-school learning environment will have lots of opportunities to create lasting relationships with their classmates and instructors, on a personal and professional level. This gives you a stronger support system as you train and prepare for your new career path. Smaller schools also give students the option to be closer to home and get support from family and friends, which can be extremely helpful during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Join the Boardman Family

If you’re searching for a small school to help you succeed on your path to a new healthcare career, then Boardman Training Center could be a great fit for you. We provide a supportive family environment that gives you the necessary knowledge, skills, and certifications to be successful on your new career path.

Charity Unruh – Student Highlight

Meet Charity Unruh, our student highlight for this week!

After graduating from high school, many people are unsure of what to do next. With so many options and career paths available to choose from, it can be hard to decide which one fits you best. Charity, our student highlight this week, experienced this as well.

“I was trying to decide what I wanted to do but couldn’t. I knew I had always wanted to do something in the medical field,” said Charity. When she was younger, her grandpa had cancer and had to have a lot of surgeries. In helping take care of her grandpa, she discovered that her niche in life was helping people. Her grandpa’s hospice nurse even told Charity that she is a natural nurse.

Charity’s mom is a pharmacist and she learned a lot about the medical field from her.

Before attending Boardman Training Center, Charity took a year off from school after high school to figure out what she wanted to do. She was originally going to go to college for nursing, but the cost of tuition was very high and unaffordable.

Charity Unruh-Student Highlight

“I chose BTC because it was affordable. I liked that it is a small facility with small classes. Also, I could tell right away that the staff cares about their students,” said Charity of her decision to attend Boardman Training Center.

Charity is currently enrolled in the Medical Office Specialist program at BTC and is on the fast-track to starting her career in the medical field.

“I chose my program because I’ve always been fascinated with the medical field. My grandpa is the one who inspired me by helping take care of him when he had cancer,” said Charity. Also, her grandpa always told her that she would be a nurse.

When asked what her favorite part is of attending BTC, Charity said, “it’s that everyone here is so close knit, like a family. I also love that the staff goes to every length to make sure their students succeed.”

EKG is Charity’s favorite class in the Medical Office Specialist training program at BTC because she has always been fascinated by the heart.

Charity says that she would love to specialize in cardiology after graduating from BTC, because the cardiovascular system is her favorite and fascinates her the most. This goes back to Charity’s high school anatomy class when she dissected a pig’s heart. She was immediately intrigued and knew she wanted to work with the heart.

“In five years, I would like to have made a difference in as many peoples’ lives as I possibly can,” said Charity. She would even like to assist in heart surgeries one day.

When asked if she would refer Boardman Training Center to a friend, Charity said, “I would most definitely refer BTC to a friend. The staff is incredible, and it feels like I’ve created a second family by attending BTC.”

Charity truly loves training for a new medical career at BTC and says that it has been phenomenal for her. She couldn’t imagine her life if she had not come here for school.

Even though high school was not her thing, Charity says coming to BTC was different because they take care of you here. She doesn’t know what she will do when she leaves BTC because it has become a second home to her.

“Give it a shot. Look into it. Honestly, if you enroll here, you will not regret it. It will be like you have a second family,” said Charity, giving her advice for anyone considering enrolling at BTC to train for a new healthcare career.
